Li Chiao-Ping Dance's 2016-2017 season...

November 17-19, 2016  |  Weight of Things, MARGARET H'DOUBLER PERFORMANCE SPACE, 1050 UNIVERSITY AVE MADISON, WI

Weight of Things features three premiere works and three recent works choreographed by Li Chiao-Ping, including: a new solo performed by Li Chiao-Ping titled "E Pluribus Unum", danced to the powerful voice and words of Charlie Chaplin; a trio created in collaboration with textile artist Meeta Mastani, UW-Madison Arts Institute's Fall 2016 artist-in-residence, which explores women's roles through a meditative journey; and a new group work titled "Weight of Things", which guides the audience through a highly visual and metaphoric journey to explore ideas of social and environmental sustainability. Recent works on the program include: a new solo made for company dancer Liz Sexe titled "Woman In Glass"; Li's athletic "duet" with a table, "in medias res"; and "Tendrils", a lush group work accompanied live by flutist Laura Falzón, performing the gorgeous music of Eve Beglarian.

March 9-11, 2017  |  Landed, OVERTURE CENTER FOR THE ARTS, PROMENADE HALL, MADISON, WI
June 2, 2017  |  Landed, 7:30PM NYU JACK CRYSTAL THEATRE, 111 SECOND AVE, NEW YORK, NY

A MAP Fund supported collaboration between choreographer Li Chiao-Ping and visual artist Douglas Rosenberg, Landed examines and explores the immigrant experience. Who claims and controls the land and who decides who belongs there? Focusing on two ports of entry into the United States - Angel Island and Ellis Island - Li and Rosenberg interweave spoken text with Rosenberg's acclaimed, poignant visual designs and Li's signature, inventive movement to engage stories of immigration from past to present. The Landed program begins with a nuanced solo titled "Murmurs" by acclaimed choreographer Doug Varone, made for performer Linda Belans, and "daughter", a screendance work choreographed, directed, and performed by Li Chiao-Ping.
